Made in God’s image Black, Asian & Minority Ethnics (BAME) have a unique and invaluable contribution to make to theological education of the next generation of black and white Christian leaders. If we fail to make our unique contribution, then we fail others and ourselves. We must step up to the mark.
This need to step up is given added impetus by the fact that the Christian centre of gravity is now firmly located in the global south. Yet many western institutions only pay lip service to this paradigm shift. Even those that claim to be progressive often unconsciously display a colonial mindset. Not only must we be present to articulate a different paradigm we must also be present to challenge the unhelpful attitudes and mindsets that inform the curricula that is set before students. Such challenges to hegemonic institutions can never be undertaken by one or two lone voices. The emotional energy required to do so will sap their strength and they will soon give up. Therefore we need to be present in numbers to mount an effective challenge.
